Healings in OLD Testament

 

Old Testament Healing Situations and Verses:


1. God Heals Abimelech's Household

Genesis 20:17
“So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants. Then they bore children.”

Context:

  • Abraham prayed after God had closed the wombs of Abimelech's household because of Abraham’s wife, Sarah. Through Abraham’s prayer, healing and fertility were restored.

2. Healing Waters of Marah

Exodus 15:23-26
“When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people complained against Moses, saying, ‘What shall we drink?’ So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet... For I am the Lord who heals you.”

Context:

  • The Israelites encountered bitter waters at Marah. God instructed Moses to cast a tree into the water, which healed the bitterness and made the water drinkable.

3. The Plague of Boils

Exodus 9:10-11
“Then they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered them toward heaven. And they caused boils that broke out in sores on man and beast.”

Context:

  • Though this passage involves an affliction of boils as part of the plagues of Egypt, it also reflects God's power over physical health and His ability to heal or afflict as part of divine judgment or mercy.

4. Healing of Miriam’s Leprosy

Numbers 12:10-15
“And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and there she was, a leper. So Aaron said to Moses, ‘Oh, my lord! Please do not lay this sin on us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned. Please do not let her be as one dead.’ So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, ‘Please heal her, O God, I pray!’ Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘If her father had but spit in her face, would she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp seven days, and afterward she may be received again.’”

Context:

  • Miriam was struck with leprosy for speaking against Moses, but through Moses’ intercession, she was healed after being excluded from the camp for seven days.

5. Healing from Snake Bites (Bronze Serpent)

Numbers 21:8-9
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.’ So Moses made a bronze serpent and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.”

Context:

  • The Israelites were afflicted with snake bites due to their disobedience. God provided healing by instructing Moses to craft a bronze serpent. Whoever looked at it in faith was healed.

6. Healing Through Prayer (Hannah’s Prayer for a Child)

1 Samuel 1:10-11, 19-20
“And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. Then she made a vow and said, ‘O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life...’ So they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord... and the Lord remembered her. So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel.”

Context:

  • Hannah, previously barren, prayed to God for a child. God healed her barrenness, and she bore Samuel.

7. Healing of King Hezekiah

2 Kings 20:5-6
“Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: ‘I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord. And I will add to your days fifteen years.’”

Context:

  • King Hezekiah fell ill and was near death. After his heartfelt prayer, God healed him and added 15 more years to his life.

8. Healing of Naaman’s Leprosy

2 Kings 5:10-14
“And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, ‘Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean.’... So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.”

Context:

  • Naaman, a Syrian commander, was healed of leprosy by following the prophet Elisha’s instruction to wash in the Jordan River seven times.

9. Healing of the Land and People (King Solomon's Prayer)

2 Chronicles 7:14
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Context:

  • Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the temple emphasized God's promise to heal the land and His people if they humbled themselves, prayed, and repented.

10. The Healing Promise to Job

Job 42:10
“And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.”

Context:

  • After immense physical suffering and loss, Job’s health and fortune were restored when he prayed for his friends, showing God’s healing power over his physical and emotional afflictions.

11. Prophecy of Healing in Isaiah

Isaiah 53:5
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”

Context:

  • This prophecy speaks of the coming Messiah (Jesus) and the healing that would be provided through His suffering.

12. Healing in the Time of Exile (Jeremiah’s Prophecies)

Jeremiah 30:17
“For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds,’ says the Lord, ‘Because they called you an outcast saying: ‘This is Zion; No one seeks her.’”

Context:

  • God’s promise to restore the health of His people during their time of exile, offering hope of physical and spiritual healing.

13. Healing in Prophecy (Malachi)

Malachi 4:2
“But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves.”

Context:

  • Malachi speaks of the coming of the Messiah with healing and restoration for those who fear the Lord.
