Fire of God in Old & New Testament

Chronological list of Bible verses regarding the Fire of God from Genesis to Revelation:


Genesis

  1. Genesis 3:24After He drove the man out, He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

  2. Genesis 15:17When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.

  3. Genesis 19:24Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens.


Exodus

  1. Exodus 3:2There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.

  2. Exodus 9:23-24When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the LORD sent thunder and hail, and lightning flashed down to the ground. So the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt; hail fell and lightning flashed back and forth. It was the worst storm in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.

  3. Exodus 13:21-22By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.

  4. Exodus 19:18Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently.

  5. Exodus 24:17To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.


Leviticus

  1. Leviticus 6:12-13The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it. The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

  2. Leviticus 9:24 – Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.

  3. Leviticus 10:1-2Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to His command. So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.


Numbers

  1. Numbers 11:1-3Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when He heard them, His anger was aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.

  2. Numbers 16:35And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.


Deuteronomy

  1. Deuteronomy 4:24For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

  2. Deuteronomy 9:3But be assured today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; He will subdue them before you.


Judges

  1. Judges 6:21Then the angel of the LORD touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in His hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread.

1 Kings

  1. 1 Kings 18:38Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

2 Kings

  1. 2 Kings 1:10Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men.

Job

  1. Job 1:16While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

Psalms

  1. Psalm 97:3Fire goes before Him and consumes His foes on every side.

  2. Psalm 104:4He makes winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants.


Isaiah

  1. Isaiah 4:5Then the LORD will create over all of Mount Zion and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night.

  2. Isaiah 33:14The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: "Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?"


Jeremiah

  1. Jeremiah 20:9But if I say, "I will not mention His word or speak anymore in His name," His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

Ezekiel

  1. Ezekiel 1:4I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal.

  2. Ezekiel 28:18By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you.


Daniel

  1. Daniel 3:25He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."

Joel

  1. Joel 2:3Before them fire devours, behind them a flame blazes.

Matthew

  1. Matthew 3:11I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  2. Matthew 3:12His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will clear His threshing floor, gathering His wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.


Mark

  1. Mark 9:49Everyone will be salted with fire.

Luke

  1. Luke 12:49I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

Acts

  1. Acts 2:3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

Hebrews

  1. Hebrews 12:29For our "God is a consuming fire."

2 Peter

  1. 2 Peter 3:7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

Revelation

  1. Revelation 1:14The hair on His head was white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like blazing fire.

  2. Revelation 20:9But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.

  3. Revelation 20:14-15Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
