The Gift Is Yours: Speak in Tongues by Faith
“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons;
they will speak with new tongues...”
— Mark 16:15-17 (NKJV)
Many believers know this verse, but few realize its immediate and present reality.
Jesus didn’t say “they might” or “they will one day”—He said “they will speak in new tongues.” It’s not a future possibility; it's a present truth. If you have believed in Jesus Christ and confessed Him as Lord and Savior, this commission is for you. You are already qualified.
Tongues: A Sign for Believers
There's a difference between the gift of tongues (as one of the nine spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12) and speaking in tongues as a sign for all believers. The latter is an inheritance of the born-again experience—like Cornelius and his household who spoke in tongues before water baptism (Acts 10:44-47).
The enemy knows this.
He doesn’t want you to accept it. He wants to plant seeds of doubt:
-
"What if I’m making it up?"
-
"Maybe I haven’t fully believed yet."
-
"This can't be real, it sounds too simple."
I’ve been there.
My First Encounter with Tongues
The first time I spoke in tongues, a brother in Christ laid hands on me. I had already believed in Jesus and confessed Him as Lord. I began to speak—"shalalala..." just a few syllables. I doubted. “Is this it? Did I not believe enough? Am I faking it?”
That night, fear tried to take over. What if I’m blaspheming the Holy Spirit? What if it’s just my mind making up sounds?
But then the Word of God rose up in me. I remembered:
“These signs WILL follow those who believe...they will speak with new tongues.”
So I went back to the Lord in prayer and said:
“Lord, I don’t want to impress anyone. I don’t want to be fake. But Your Word says that those who believe will speak. So even if I’m making it up, I’ll still speak by faith.”
And as I opened my mouth, the flow increased.
Two syllables became a sentence. One line became a river.
The more I continued, the more it flowed—not from the mind, but from the spirit.
The Spirit, Not the Soul
Tongues don’t come from your intellect or emotion.
They bypass the soul and flow directly from the spirit man, made alive by the Holy Spirit.
And when you speak in tongues, three things happen:
-
Your spirit is edified – You are built up in strength (1 Corinthians 14:4).
-
You confuse the enemy – He can’t decode the utterances of the Spirit.
-
You align with heaven’s language – You speak mysteries (1 Corinthians 14:2).
Different Expressions, One Source
As you mature in the Word and intimacy with the Holy Spirit, your tongues may shift. Sometimes:
-
You’re speaking to angels (1 Corinthians 13:1).
-
You're addressing demons in warfare.
-
You're releasing declarations into the atmosphere.
-
You're edifying yourself in secret.
They may sound similar, but the function varies. It’s the Holy Spirit who knows the purpose behind each utterance.
Don’t Let Doubt Rob Your Inheritance
Doubt is a seed planted by Satan to abort what God is birthing.
The enemy knows the power of tongues—it’s no surprise he tries to twist it, mock it, or silence it.
But faith unlocks the flow.
Just like you believed Jesus died and rose again, believe that the gift of tongues is yours.
It’s a gift—not a reward.
You don’t earn it—you receive it.
Open the Gift by Faith
Many people have spoken in tongues the moment they realized it’s already theirs.
You don’t wait for a lightning bolt or a booming voice.
You open your mouth by faith, and He fills it (Psalm 81:10).
Just speak.
Praise the Lord.
Thank Him.
Release it in reverence.
Let it flow like living water.
Final Word: He’s Got You
The Holy Spirit will never leave you confused or condemned.
He’s the Comforter, the Teacher, and the Seal of your salvation.
So speak boldly.
Pray in the Spirit.
Worship in tongues.
Declare mysteries.
And grow in your heavenly language.
The gift is yours—unwrap it with joy and use it in faith.

π₯ More Truths About Tongues: What You May Not Know
1. The 3 Manifestations of Tongues in the New Testament
Tongues are not just one singular thing. Biblically, they manifest in three distinct ways, each with different purposes:
π️ a. Sign of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Personal Use)
-
Reference: Acts 2:4, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 19:6
-
Purpose: Initial evidence that someone has been baptized in the Holy Spirit.
-
Nature: The speaker talks to God in a language unknown to their mind (1 Corinthians 14:2).
“For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God...” (1 Corinthians 14:2 NKJV)
π£️ b. Gift of Diverse Tongues (Public Use)
-
Reference: 1 Corinthians 12:10
-
Purpose: A supernatural gift used in corporate gatherings that must be interpreted.
-
Nature: This tongue is directed to people, much like prophecy, and requires the gift of interpretation to edify the body (1 Corinthians 14:27-28).
“If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three...and let one interpret.” (1 Corinthians 14:27)
πͺ c. Tongues for Edification (Private Devotion)
-
Reference: 1 Corinthians 14:4, Jude 1:20
-
Purpose: Personal spiritual strengthening, prayer, and worship.
-
Nature: Builds up your inner man, gives you rest (Isaiah 28:11–12), and stirs faith.
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit...” (Jude 1:20 NKJV)
2. Tongues and Rest
“For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people...
To whom He said, ‘This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,’
And, ‘This is the refreshing’...”
(Isaiah 28:11-12 NKJV)
Tongues brings rest to your weary soul. It is a form of spiritual sabbath built into your everyday life.
3. Tongues are a Weapon of War
In spiritual warfare, tongues are a coded frequency the enemy cannot intercept.
“For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us...” (Romans 8:26)
When you are overwhelmed, unsure, or under attack, speaking in tongues activates Spirit-led intercession, warfare, and breakthrough.
4. Tongues Connect to Interpretation, Prophecy, and Revelation
When interpreted, tongues can become prophetic utterances.
“If I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful...
...I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.” (1 Corinthians 14:14-15)
Sometimes you’ll feel a shift while speaking in tongues—your spirit will start to receive downloads. Pause. Listen. Interpretation or prophecy may flow.
5. Tongues are Not to Be Forbidden
“Do not forbid to speak with tongues.” (1 Corinthians 14:39)
Many churches quench the Spirit here. But Paul is clear: tongues are not to be silenced—they are to be practiced in order and with honor.
6. The Devil Has Counterfeits, But That Doesn’t Invalidate the Real
Some say, “What if I’m just copying someone else? What if it’s demonic?”
The presence of counterfeits (babbling, demonic tongues in occultism, mocking tongues in false religions) does not cancel out the real. Satan mimics what God creates to confuse and accuse.
You’ll know it’s real if:
-
It exalts Jesus (1 Corinthians 12:3).
-
It brings inner peace, not fear.
-
It edifies and stirs up love, not pride.
-
It leads you into deeper intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
7. You Can Ask for Interpretation
“Let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.” (1 Corinthians 14:13)
You don’t need to remain in mystery forever. The Holy Spirit can give you glimpses or full understanding of what you're declaring—sometimes as visions, thoughts, or prophetic clarity.
8. Tongues and Singing
Paul said:
“I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” (1 Corinthians 14:15)
Tongues are not limited to prayer—you can worship in tongues, and it creates a divine melody that opens heaven.
9. Tongues Is a Language from Heaven
Sometimes you may speak earthly languages unknown to you (Acts 2:6-11). Other times, it’s a heavenly tongue (1 Corinthians 13:1) that no man understands.
It may sound repetitive at first, but every spiritual language grows, like a child learning to speak.
10. You Must Partner with the Holy Spirit
“They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4)
The Holy Spirit gives the utterance—but you must do the speaking. You won’t be possessed. It’s a partnership. Just like Peter walking on water—it starts by stepping out in faith.
π Final Keys to Release the Flow
-
Yield, don’t strive.
-
Worship, then speak.
-
Don’t overthink—speak from your belly (John 7:38).
-
Be okay with childlike sounds—God honors hunger more than polish.
-
The more you speak, the more the language unfolds.
π¬ Closing Declaration:
“I believe I have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
I receive my prayer language by faith.
I will open my mouth and the Spirit will fill it.
I will speak, I will sing, I will pray in the Spirit.
I am edified, refreshed, and filled with fire.
I refuse doubt. I release faith.
The gift is mine. The river flows. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!”
