EHYEH: I AM
EHYEH: I AM
The Meaning of Ehyeh
When Moses encountered God in the burning bush, he asked for God's name. The response, "I Am Who I Am" (Exodus 3:14), was mysterious and profound. The Hebrew term "Ehyeh" (eh-YEH) means "I Am," echoing God’s self-existence and eternal presence. This name suggests that God is not only unchanging and ever-existing but also always present with His people. It is closely connected to Yahweh, the sacred name for God that many Jews refrain from speaking due to its holiness.
Jesus and the "I Am" Statements
In the New Testament, Jesus identified himself with Ehyeh when he declared, "Before Abraham was ever born, I am" (John 8:58). This bold statement indicated that he was claiming equality with Yahweh. The Gospel of John further reveals several "I Am" declarations by Jesus, emphasizing his divine nature:
- "I am the bread of life." (John 6:35)
- "I am the light of the world." (John 8:12)
- "I am the way, the truth, and the life." (John 14:6)
In these declarations, Jesus revealed the richness of God's nature, making God approachable and relatable.
Praying to Ehyeh
Encountering the Light
Imagine traveling back in time to Jerusalem, to the Feast of Tabernacles nearly two thousand years ago. The city would be ablaze with light from giant menorahs in the temple, celebrating the harvest and remembering the pillar of fire that guided Israel through the wilderness.
Now picture yourself the day after the festival, listening as Jesus proclaims, "I am the light of the world." His words would have been especially striking given the recent celebration of light, a reminder of God's guidance and presence. The reaction from the crowd varied—some were enraged at his claim to divinity, while others began to believe in him as the "I Am" and the light that overcomes darkness.
The Choice of Faith
Today, we face the same choice as those who heard Jesus two millennia ago: reject his claims or embrace him as the great "I Am." When we choose to follow him, we walk in the light, finding peace, guidance, and salvation.
A Prayer to Ehyeh
Lord, you are the light that dispels darkness and guides us into the path of peace. Shine on us now, so we may walk in your truth and embrace your presence. Help us recognize you as the eternal "I Am," the one who is with us always.
