The Meaning of El Elyon
The name El Elyon translates to “God Most High,” “Highest,” “Exalted One,” or simply “Most High.” This title emphasizes God's supreme authority and transcendence over all aspects of life. Originally applied to the highest of the Canaanite deities, the Hebrews adopted it as a designation for Yahweh, signifying that He alone reigns above all.
The name El Elyon (EL el-YOHN) first appears in the biblical narrative in connection with Melchizedek, the king of Salem, who was also a priest of El Elyon. In Genesis 14:18-20, Melchizedek blesses Abraham in the name of El Elyon, highlighting God's sovereignty.
A powerful illustration of the consequences of forgetting God's supremacy can be found in the story of King Nebuchadnezzar in the Book of Daniel (4:19, 24-34). After boasting about his achievements, Nebuchadnezzar is warned that he must recognize the authority of the Most High. His failure to do so results in a period of insanity, during which he lives like an animal. This story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of acknowledging God as the ultimate authority.
In the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the Son of the Most High, and the Holy Spirit is described as the power of the Most High. Believers in Christ are also identified as sons and daughters of the Most High by emulating God, reflecting His character and love.
Praying to El Elyon
A Lesson from King Nebuchadnezzar
Once upon a time in Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar admired the grandeur of his kingdom, exclaiming, “Look how great Babylon is! I built this royal palace by my own impressive power and for my glorious honor.” But then, a voice from heaven declared that he needed to recognize who truly is the Most High. As a consequence, Nebuchadnezzar lost his sanity and lived among the animals for seven years, until he finally acknowledged God’s sovereignty.
This narrative can be unsettling yet satisfying, as it illustrates the downfall of prideful leaders—something we might wish upon those who misuse their power. However, it also challenges us to reflect on our own tendencies.
Many of us, myself included, often display a lack of robust faith. This may stem from our inclination to rely on ourselves rather than God. We often place ourselves on the throne of our lives, focusing our prayers more on our needs and desires than on praising God and seeking His will.
Difficult times can help correct this perspective, teaching us our limitations. Whether we face challenges or ease in life, it’s essential to seek a fresh revelation of who God is. We must step down from the thrones we’ve created for ourselves and bow before the Lord Most High, repenting of our tendencies to prioritize our wants and fears above Him.
A Prayer for Dependence on God
El Elyon, cure me of the insanity of depending on myself rather than depending on You. You alone are God Most High. Teach me the joy of ordering my life under Your sovereignty.
Promises Associated with the Name
“Whoever lives under the shelter of Elyon will remain in the shadow of Shadday. . . You have made Elyon your home. No harm will come to you. No sickness will come near your house. He will put His angels in charge of you to protect you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:1, 9-11)
