EL CHAY: LIVING GOD

EL CHAY: LIVING GOD

The Meaning of El Chay

Scripture consistently warns against the worship of false gods, and the first of the Ten Commandments explicitly prohibits idol worship. The title El Chay, meaning “Living God,” highlights God's role as the Creator of everything, contrasting sharply with the idols made from metal, wood, or stone—mere creations of human hands. This title establishes Israel's God as distinct from the false gods of surrounding nations.

The prophet Jeremiah vividly illustrates this contrast, stating:

“The religion of the people is worthless. Woodcutters cut down trees from the forest. The hands of craftsmen prepare them with axes. Craftsmen decorate them with silver and gold and fasten them together with hammers and nails so that they won’t fall over. These trees are like scarecrows in cucumber gardens. They aren’t able to speak. They have to be carried, because they can’t walk. Don’t be afraid of them. They can’t harm you. They can’t do you any good either.” (Jeremiah 10:3-5)

Unlike these lifeless idols, the Living God is the Maker of heaven and earth. He alone is the source of our life; we live because He lives.

Praying to El Chay

The Futility of Idolatry

Have you ever found yourself talking on the phone only to realize there's no one on the line? I had this experience recently while speaking with a friend, only to discover the call had dropped. I felt awkward, speaking enthusiastically to thin air.

Jeremiah compares this to praying to an idol—addressing concerns to a block of wood, stone, or metal. In his words, you might as well be worshiping a soda bottle! In one translation, Jeremiah even calls idol worshipers “complete idiots.”

Modern Idols

Fortunately, as modern people, we believe we know better than to worship idols or bow down to statues. But do we? Consider the celebrity idols that captivate us. I remember attending a Michael Bolton concert where he wiped his brow and handed the tissue to an adoring fan—an act that resembled worship.

Our idols can take countless forms: people, health, education, money, success, or even shopping. We often think that achieving these things will bring us happiness and security, yet they often disappoint. People can fail us, health can decline, and the stock market can be unpredictable.

Instead of chasing after these fleeting gods, we have the opportunity to worship the one true God, El Chay, the Living God. He transcends culture and time, yet is intimately present with us. This is the God who created the universe and formed each of us in our mother’s wombs. We are not the products of our hands; rather, we are the works of His hands.

Lord, you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. Truly, I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I praise you, O Living God.

Promises Associated with El Chay

  1. “I decree that in every part of my kingdom people should tremble with terror in front of Daniel’s Elah, the living Elah who continues forever. His kingdom will never be destroyed. His power lasts to the end of time. He saves, rescues, and does miraculous signs and amazing things in heaven and on earth.” (Daniel 6:26-27)

  2. “Clearly, we are the temple of the living God. As God said, ‘I will live and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.’” (2 Corinthians 6:16)

The title El Chay signifies the Living God who is always present and actively engaged in our lives. By recognizing Him as our Creator and the source of all life, we can reject the false idols that seek to fill our hearts and find true fulfillment in worshiping the Living God. Let us honor Him by living in a way that reflects His character and truth, embracing the abundant life He offers.
