SAR SHALOM: Prince of Peace

SAR SHALOM: Prince of Peace

Overview

The term Sar Shalom (SAR sha-LOME), meaning "Prince of Peace," reflects humanity's deep longing for peace in a world often filled with conflict and strife. However, the Hebrew concept of shalom extends beyond mere absence of turmoil; it embodies wholeness, health, satisfaction, safety, well-being, and prosperity. To experience shalom is to enjoy a complete sense of peace in every aspect of life.

Biblical Context

While the New Testament does not directly call Jesus Sar Shalom, the title originates from Isaiah and is traditionally associated with Him as the bringer of peace. The angels proclaimed at Jesus' birth: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those who have his good will” (Luke 2:14). Paul confirms this in Ephesians 2:14, stating, “He is our peace.”

In Greek, the word for peace is eirene, similar to the Hebrew shalom in that it conveys a holistic view of peace. In Mark 5:34, Jesus tells a healed woman to “go in peace,” linking healing and peace together. Jesus reconciled us with God through His sacrifice, making peace possible. This reconciliation leads to peace with others and within ourselves. Ultimately, when Christ's kingdom is fully established, strife will cease, and all who belong to Him will enjoy the fullness of peace.

Praying to Sar Shalom

Seeking Peace in a Troubled World

Christine Anderson, a friend, traveled to some of the most conflict-ridden countries, including Rwanda, the Congo, Lebanon, and Israel. In her journey, she encountered individuals haunted by violence, yearning for peace.

While visiting Bethlehem, Christine approached the separation wall dividing the West Bank from Israel, expecting to see anger in the graffiti. Instead, she found messages like:

  • Peace
  • To Dream of Peace
  • Give Peace a Chance
  • Jesus Said Peace I Give You (John 14:27)
  • Make Love, Not War
  • End This Madness

The most striking image was of a dove wearing a bulletproof vest, symbolizing the harsh reality of pursuing peace.

Christine also met professors at Bethlehem Bible College, who believe peace is intertwined with justice. For them, peace isn’t just an internal feeling; it requires tangible action, sacrifice, and often personal risk.

As Christine reflected on her travels, she recognized that achieving the peace the world desperately seeks is costly. It doesn’t come through mere wishful thinking; it demands sacrifice, ultimately represented in the shape of the cross.

Prayer

Lord, you call the peacemakers blessed. Please bless all those around the world who are doing the hard and often dangerous work of making peace. Give them wisdom, strength, and favor. Bless the weak, the poor, and all those oppressed by violence. May the whole world come to know you, the Prince of Peace.

Promises Associated with the Name

  1. “With perfect peace you will protect those whose minds cannot be changed, because they trust you.” (Isaiah 26:3)

  2. “Those who live by the corrupt nature have the corrupt nature’s attitude. But those who live by the spiritual nature have the spiritual nature’s attitude. The corrupt nature’s attitude leads to death. But the spiritual nature’s attitude leads to life and peace.” (Romans 8:5-6)

  3. “Never worry about anything. But in every situation let God know what you need in prayers and requests while giving thanks. Then God’s peace, which goes beyond anything we can imagine, will guard your thoughts and emotions through Christ Yeshua.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Conclusion

Sar Shalom, the Prince of Peace, embodies the wholeness and completeness that comes from God. As we navigate the complexities and conflicts of life, we can trust in Him as the source of true peace—one that transcends understanding and fosters reconciliation with God, others, and ourselves. May we actively pursue peace in our lives and communities, reflecting the heart of Sar Shalom to the world around us.
