Understanding Righteousness
In today's culture, righteousness isn't often celebrated or understood. However, it is essential for our happiness and involves maintaining a right relationship with God. To be righteous means conforming to God's character and fulfilling our responsibilities toward Him and others. Despite our deep longing for righteousness, it’s important to recognize that it is a gift from God, attainable only through faith in His Son.
The Hebrew word tsedeq translates to "righteousness" but also encompasses meanings like "justice," "truth," and "integrity." In the Hebrew Scriptures, individuals who observed the law were often deemed righteous, yet the New Testament emphasizes that true righteousness extends beyond outward actions; it touches the heart—our thoughts, motives, and desires. Righteousness is not merely about following rules but about embodying God’s character in our lives. As Addison Leitch articulates, righteousness is fundamentally a relationship rather than an achievement. It represents a journey of loyalty, commitment, and hope.
The prophet Jeremiah foretold a coming King named Yahweh Tsidqenu (yah-WEH tsid-KAY-nu), or "The Lord Our Righteousness." Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, restoring our relationship with God through His life, death, and resurrection.

A Thought Experiment on Identity
Imagine a personal ad:
“Say hello to a forty-two-year-old divorced mother of two from Southern California. I am a brunette of Italian descent, a little taller than average, a little plumper than average—though still considered a looker by my male friends. . .”
What if we were to rewrite this ad, focusing on deeper qualities?
“Say hello to a fellow human being. I’m not going to tell you whether I live in Sacramento or Saskatchewan. Neither will you discover whether I’m a psychologist, a secretary, or a research scientist. The most important thing about me—the one thing you need to know—is that people say I’m a lot like my Father. I know the comparison is way overblown, but I love to hear it because my Dad is the greatest person I know. He’s hugely forgiving, generous to a fault, loving beyond belief, and kind, kind, kind...”
Such an ad is unlikely to be found on a dating site, but it serves to illustrate that our most attractive qualities are not our physical attributes but the beauty of our character and soul. Are we generous or stingy? Patient or prickly? Forgiving or faultfinding? These traits shape our relationships and how we are perceived by others.
Righteousness and Its Misunderstandings
Righteousness often carries negative connotations in modern discourse, frequently confused with self-righteousness. However, Jesus urges us to hunger and thirst for righteousness. To be righteous is simply to be in a right relationship with God and others. Instead of resisting God, we should allow Him to reshape us to reflect His character.
If you question the value God places on righteousness, consider this passage from Daniel:
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” (Daniel 12:3 NIV)
True righteousness shines with God’s light and life into a world desperately seeking His love. It is not a burdensome trait but one that draws others in, illuminating the path of faith.
