MIQWEH YISRAEL

Hope of Israel

The Nature of Hope

Hope acts as a stabilizing force in our lives, providing steadiness during times of fear and difficulty. It does not rely on our desires or expectations but is grounded in the unwavering trustworthiness of God. Biblical hope is rooted in God's goodness, mercy, and power. We express this hope through patient endurance, nurture it by immersing ourselves in God's Word, and strengthen it by faithfully following Him. While we may hope for earthly blessings, our ultimate hope is in the life to come, when God will wipe away our tears and invite us to share in His everlasting joy.

In the New Testament, hope is firmly anchored in Jesus—His life, death, resurrection, and the promise of His return in glory. The Holy Spirit dwells within us, renewing the life of Christ, allowing us to have hope in our present circumstances. Miqweh Yisrael (MIK-weh yisra-AIL), the Hope of Israel, represents the God who saves His people.

A Story of Hope

Andy DeVries faced a life-altering situation after being struck by a car while riding his motorcycle. In the hospital, doctors informed him that his leg was shattered, and there was a possibility of amputation.

During his hospital stay, a physician’s assistant named Sarah Scholl asked Andy a seemingly odd question: “What kind of golf ball do you play?” Though Andy initially found it insensitive, he replied that he liked the Titleist Pro V1 ball. The next day, he was surprised to find a pack of those golf balls among the flowers in his room. This thoughtful gesture lifted his spirits, shifting his focus from self-pity to a glimmer of hope for the future, even if that future meant adapting to life with one leg.

When surgery day came, the doctors were able to save his leg, but Andy was still faced with the possibility of never walking again. Afterward, Sarah wheeled him out to the ambulance, and they discussed her loss of her father. She made a heartfelt request: Would Andy consider walking her down the aisle when the time came? At that point, Andy found her request surprising since she didn’t have a boyfriend, but he assured her he would be there.

Years later, after maintaining their friendship, Andy received an email from Sarah saying she had a boyfriend and asking if he would still walk her down the aisle. This time, when they reunited for her wedding in Oregon, Andy stood tall, having defied the odds of his injuries.

Sarah later reflected on their relationship, recognizing the fragility of the human condition and how she made a promise to Andy during his time of crisis—a promise she was determined to keep.

The Assurance of Hope

Sarah’s story illustrates how delicate life can be and how essential hope is during difficult times. God understands our vulnerabilities and has made promises to guide us through our struggles. Hope is the anticipation that these promises will ultimately come true. As Christians, we believe in these promises because we trust in the One who made them. Because of Miqweh Yisrael, our promise-keeping God, we are blessed with a future filled with hope.
