GOOD SHEPHERD

GOOD SHEPHERD

The Role of the Shepherd

In Scripture, God’s people are often described using various metaphors: a temple, a body, a bride, a garden, a vineyard, or a flock of sheep. Shepherding was a vital occupation in ancient Palestine, practiced by biblical figures like Abel, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and David. The shepherd's primary responsibilities included providing food, protection, and guidance for the flock.

When God’s people stray, they are likened to a scattered flock, and their leaders may be portrayed as false shepherds who neglect their well-being. Without a watchful shepherd, the sheep become vulnerable to wild animals and thieves.

In response to their waywardness, God promises to become their Shepherd. One of the most touching images of God in the Hebrew Scriptures is found in Isaiah:

“Like a shepherd he takes care of his flock. He gathers the lambs in his arms. He carries them in his arms. He gently helps the sheep and their lambs.”
Isaiah 40:11

Jesus embodies the role of the Good Shepherd, or Poimen Kalos, demonstrating the extent he will go to protect his sheep. Unlike those who work for pay and may abandon the flock, Jesus is willing to lay down his life for them. After his resurrection, he urged Peter to follow his example by feeding his sheep, establishing the early church's leaders as pastors, another translation of the Greek word poimen.

Praying to the Good Shepherd

Judith Fain, a doctoral candidate at the University of Durham, often spends time in Israel. One day, while walking near Bethlehem, she witnessed three shepherds approaching each other with their flocks. When they conversed, their sheep began to intermingle, and Judith wondered how they would separate them. However, as the shepherds called out, the large flock sorted itself into three separate groups, with each sheep following the voice of its shepherd.

This experience exemplifies why the land of Israel is often referred to as the fifth Gospel. Even two thousand years after Christ’s death, it continues to testify to his teachings. Jesus assured his followers, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep, and my sheep know me.” He promised to seek out the one sheep that strayed and identified himself as the Shepherd willing to give his life for the safety of his flock.

The promises of our Good Shepherd reveal our identity: we are weak, vulnerable, and beloved, while he remains our strong, protecting Shepherd.

Let us thank God for the Good Shepherd who leads us and helps us find peace, confident in his ability to care for us and guide us home.

Lord, you are the Good Shepherd. Thank you for watching over me day and night and for bringing me back when I’ve strayed. Please bless ________________, who seems far from you right now. May he/she hear your voice and return to you.

Promises Associated with the Name

“I will promise them peace. I will remove the wild animals from the land so that my sheep can live safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods... They will no longer be prey to the nations, and the wild animals will no longer eat them. They will live safely, and no one will frighten them... You, my sheep, are the sheep in my pasture. You are mortal, and I am your Elohim, declares Adonay Yahweh.”
Ezekiel 34:25, 28-31

“The lamb in the center near the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to springs filled with the water of life, and God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”
Revelation 7:17

Reflection

The title of Good Shepherd highlights Jesus' commitment to guide, protect, and nourish us. As sheep, we are reminded of our dependence on Him for safety and direction. Jesus’ promise to lay down his life for his flock emphasizes the depth of his love and care.

As we pray to the Good Shepherd, we can find comfort and assurance in His guidance. He calls us by name, ensuring we are never alone, even in our struggles. May we listen for His voice and follow Him, knowing that He will lead us to peace, provision, and eternal life.
